In 1975, Norm built a Full Length Floor Console for the Ford Mk1 Escort Panel Van he had just bought from his dad. The goal was to add a few creature comforts and improve the functionality. It featured an armrest, gauges, cup holders and a decorative boot around the manual shifter and handbrake. His mum, Gwynne, stitched the vinyl cover. It didn’t take long for friends and local car enthusiasts to start asking if he could make consoles for their vehicles too. Within a few weeks, there was a queue of people wanting a custom Full Length Console of their own. What had started as a personal project for Norm’s Escort was quickly becoming the beginning of Car Console Supplies. Pictured below is the first photo we have from the company’s history. A makeshift workbench supported by trestles and a 44-gallon drum, a few rolls of vinyl and some sheets of plywood combined with Norm’s creative vision, sparked the beginning of what would grow into a well respected name in the automotive industry.

In the early 1980s, Denise joined the business, taking on everything from sewing the vinyl covers to administration, sales and trade shows. More than 40 years later, Denise is still an owner of the business and oversees all of our textile work and some production processes. As demand grew, the single-car garage was quickly outgrown. After countless weekends at shows and years of advertising through the Yellow Pages, magazines and other local channels, the business moved into a factory on Princes Highway in Carlton. Production began be streamlined, with Ford and Holden models forming the backbone of the range and the company building a reputation for neat, OEM-style interior enhancements.

As Australia fell in love with the Land Cruiser and Patrol, the demand for 4WD products rose. The rising popularity of 4WDs in the '90s prompted the company to expand its product range to include consoles designed specifically for off-road vehicles. Consoles for popular models, including the GQ Patrol and 40, 60, and 80 Series, marked the start of a new chapter, and the business quickly gained traction in the growing 4WD market. A decision that defines the business for decades to come.

Norm's brother Steven joins the team. Together the family builds the momentum that drives the brand forward through the 1990s boom in Australian off-road culture.

Our experience with RECARO began long before Ergodrive had a name. Since the 1980s, our team had been buying, selling, repairing and working with RECARO seats, building decades of hands-on product knowledge. In 2015, we took the next step and officially partnered with the Australian importer to become RECARO’s Premium Dealer for New South Wales. As the seating side of our business continued to grow, it needed an identity of its own. In 2018, Ergodrive was officially launched, giving a dedicated name to our specialist automotive seating division

Operations move to the current Kingsgrove facility a full-scale manufacturing, fitting, and showroom space. The team expands. The craft stays exactly the same.

DOTI celebrates 50 years of Australian craftsmanship. Still building every single product by hand. Still obsessed with getting it right. The garage in Oatley started it all. Kingsgrove carries it forward.
